INR Journal Club Webinar Report.
Theme: Leveraging AI And Machine Learning In Research.
INTRODUCTION
The webinar started with the moderator welcoming the participants and requesting them to introduce themselves.
He introduced and took the biography of the facilitator, Mr Blessing O. Josiah (RN, PhD©), from the Department of Nursing, Turks and Caicos Islands Community College and an INR Executive.
OVERVIEW
The facilitator, Mr. Josiah, first declared that there were no affiliations to the tools discussed in the presentation, neither were there any compensations received from any tool vendors.
He stated that the tools and articles declared were solely for educational purposes. He said this presentation explored ways technologies can help overcome challenges and unlock benefits in various research fields.
BODY
Mr Josiah defined AI (Artificial Intelligence) as the simulation of human intelligence in machines, while Machine Learning is a subset of AI that focuses on the development of algorithms that can learn from and make predictions based on data and that together, they revolutionize research methodologies.
He gave a historical perspective of AI, starting in 1950, and how it has advanced with a boom of publications and systems using AI in 2020. He discussed the numerous challenges researchers face that hinder scientific inquiry progress and how AI with machine learning provides innovative solutions.
Some of the uses of AI in research explained by Mr Josiah include:
- Idea generation and brainstorming.
- Writing assistance
- Extracting and analyzing information.
- Data analysis and interpretation.
- Writing refinement and proofreading.
- Dissemination.
- Outreach, etc.
Mr Josiah gave a list of AI tools for researchers, including their purposes and key features.
They include:
- HyperWrite.
- Elicit.
- PaperPal.
- Scribbr.
- Quillbot.
- Research Rabbit.
- Maestra.
- Scholarcy, etc.,
While those for peer reviewers include:
- Enago read.
- Perplexity AI.
- JAPRA, etc.
He also explained the advantages of AI use in research, including:
- Supercharged literature reviews.
- Accelerated data analysis.
- Enhanced research quality.
Mr Josiah further talked about the key ethical issues in AI use in academic research, encouraging participants to only present texts they can defend and that if they cannot take responsibility for the information being released, then it shouldn’t be released.
He spoke about the challenges with AI adoption, the ongoing expansion of AI in academics, and the future trends of AI.
According to him, many researchers are still very sceptical about using AI in research.
So, to effectively implement AI in research, institutions should focus on training researchers, investing in appropriate technologies and fostering a culture of innovation.
CONCLUSION
The presentation ended with the facilitator encouraging the participants to join the INR journal club, sharing the numerous benefits they would enjoy.
He then answered questions from the participants.
He says, “To be good at research, you must conduct research. Reach out to mentors and collaborate with others”.
The webinar ended at 1.40 pm after a closing remark from the CEO of INR, Mr Adesuyi Emmanuel, who also reinforced the need to join the upcoming cohort of the journal club.
About 72 participants attended the webinar.
