Title/Theme: Non-experimental Quantitative Research Design

Introduction

The moderator, Eniola Oluwadara, welcomed every member to the meeting and encouraged everyone to register their presence in the chat room. He went further to introduce the speaker in the person of Mrs. Oluwabusolami Atekoja from the Department of Nursing, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, Nigeria. 

Presentation/Lecture

Overview: The speaker outlined the course content which she grouped into 3 and it includes:

Introduction:

– Classification based on time, which includes cross-sectional, longitudinal, retrospective, and prospective research design.

– Classification based on the purpose.

Body:

She started by saying research is a step-by-step process that has to deal with collecting and examining information. She also stated that we research to improve our knowledge and understanding of the world we live in.

She spoke about Design and defined it by saying research is carried out using design, she added that it is a plan that researchers implement to answer his question or test his hypothesis.

She went further to explain cross-sectional study which she defined as an observational study, which produces a snapshot of a population at a particular point in time, Using the image of an apple as an example.

A detailed explanation of DATA was given, its definition, importance which then led us to define a ‘variable’ which is used in a single study and is based on the type of research being conducted and on what the study aims to prove or validate.

Uses of a cross-sectional study were also dealt with, noting its most important feature, one of which includes: it can compare different samples at one given time.

More light was shed on The advantage and disadvantages of a cross-sectional study.

She then moved to Longitudinal research design. Its definition, the goals and how long a longitudinal study would take, and related examples were given.

Types of longitudinal design were listed which includes:

• Trend studies
• Cohort studies
• Panel study
• Time series design

Conclusion: She concluded by giving a detailed explanation of Descriptive research.
