Introduction
The lecture was presented by Ns Chiemerigo Anne Bright (MSc) with the purpose that participants will be able to write a well-articulated research abstract that summarizes the whole paper.
Presentation/Lecture
Overview
The presenter emphasized that an abstract is a concise summary of a research document that is published or unpublished at the end of research work in order for readers to have first-hand information about the research and to spur their interest in reading the whole report.
She also stated that abstract writing has criteria in terms of sentences and words (6-7 sentences and 150-250 words respectively).
Emphasis was also placed on search, databases, and titles to help identify key terms for indexing a published paper.
Body
The presenter further spoke on the purposes of abstract writing as it enables readers to have a grasp of articles or paper, help readers to remember key points, and follow detailed information from a paper.
The presenter then talked about types of abstracts as she mentioned: “Structured Abstract” which includes background and purpose for the paper, methodology applied to the paper as well as main findings and also identify gaps.
She also mentioned “Graphical Abstract” as another type, though optional but encouraged it as it is said to attract attention from online articles.
Furthermore, she talked about Guidelines for Abstract writing as she noted compliance to stated font size and style, page or word length, quote presentation and footnote, etc. According to her, The abstract must be clear, unambiguous, and error-free, early submission is also important.
Components of Journal Abstract
The abstract should include Introduction, Research method, Major Findings, Discussion, and Conclusion (IMRADC) which was started in detail by the presenter.
The presenter also showed examples of an Abstract (Onyeneho & llesanmi, 2021).
Conclusion
An abstract is a summary of a research paper prepared for a conference presentation with a word limit of 250-500 words which speaks a lot of the presenter, as it is important as the paper.
Researchers that plan, prepare early and carefully edit are those often called upon to present their papers.
